This 1886 quarter is one of the tougher dates in the Philadelphia Seated quarter series, with the 1866 and 1853 No Arrows also in the running. This is a lustrous, well-struck example with all the all-important "thin tops" of the 8s that distinguish this example from the proof of the same year, which is a decidedly easier coin to acquire. Briggs makes a important observation about circulation strikes, noting that the obverse stars are well-detailed (as on this piece), as opposed to the proofs that come with weaker stars. Grayish-blue toning covers both sides, with rose highlights on the reverse. A prize for the collector seeking better date, circulation-strike Seated quarters. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder. Previously sold by GFRC June 2019 with the record in the Sales Archive.
