New August 9! New Orleans Key Date, Rare Grade, Hoosier Collection. Easily one of the condition census 1849-O quarters extant and the finest handled by GFRC, this impressive condition rarity belongs in the finest Liberty Seated coinage collections. Steely fields are noted on both sides under a bright light, which are overlaid with vivid album toning in reddish-orange with aquamarine-gold at the date and also surrounding all motifs. Sharply lustrous with smooth and essentially unabraded fields. The strike is nearly complete with only stars 8 through 10 lacking fully defined center points. The mintage for the 1849-O is unknown, as the production data for the date were combined with those of 1850-O in government records. Survivors are rare in all grades. PCGS has certified five at the offered graded with only three finer. The price guide stands at $20,000. This specimen is worthy of mention on any roster of important pieces in the Liberty Seated quarter series. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.0 (1998-2002) holder. The Hoosier Collection reports purchasing this piece directly from noted old time dealer and LSCC Hall of Fame member Jim O'Donnell. December 1969
