Market Acceptable $550 New December 19! Huge O, Reverse 1838-O, Old Dip, Retoned, Web-Book Plate Coin, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. This 1839-O F-108 Huge O die variety is easily attributed by a combination of a weak obverse die and a Huge O mintmark on the reverse. The F-108 reverse is the left over reverse die from 1838 and is rusted with significant die erosion or die rust marks between ON(E) and DI(ME). The F-108 obverse is initially paired with an F-102 Small O reverse and can be found with reasonably strong details. However, it appears that this obverse lapped between the F-107 Small O and F-108 Huge O reverse die pairings. When paired with the Huge O reverse, the obverse exhibits a weak date in combination with weak Stars 1 through 3. The offered example was purchase during January 1990 directly from Brian Greer and was employed as the F-108 plate coin within The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. During that timeframe, the Coin World price guide would list the Huge O as a separate variety with its own pricing. Over time, the variety has fallen out of favor though a recent Coin World feature article (with this coin's images) may reignited interest. This example has been dipped in the past with the gold obverse toning at the borders probably originating from time in an old album. It will not certify so please consider when making a purchase. It will ship in its original 1990 2x2 with Fortin notes.
