Louisana Administration Issue, Gem Original, Satiny Cartwheel Luster, Conservative Grading, Historically Significant. A historically important Lousisana Administration W-8 strike during the waning days of the New Orleans mint during early 1861. This offering is a gem and conservatively graded at MS62 level. Satiny cartwheel luster is dominate during in hand and bright light viewing. Surfaces are covered with a semi-transparent layer of rich gold patina. The W-8 diagnostics are easily seen on the reverse. The die crack at the top of STAT(ES OF) is visible under a 10x loupe along with the die clashing in the lower right shield. Obverse date punch is weak and slopes upward per the Bill Bugert diagnostics in his New Orleans Federal Register. Housed in older blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. CAC approval was a foregone conclusion for this spectacular offering. Any serious collector of the 1861 New Orleans die varieties would be thrilled to own this gem W-8 example. December 1969
