Huge O, Crusty Choice Original, Thick Gray-Brown Patina, Typical Weak Obverse Strike, Undergraded, Hoosier Collection. By now, most students of the Liberty Seated quarter series understand the background surrounding the 1854-O Huge O die variety. A large misshapen mintmark was hand cut into the reverse die with surrounding area being heavily polished. As a result the lower left facing eagle claws are weak as is the denomination QUAR DOL. This issue comes particularly poorly struck with weak obverse devices including Liberty's head and surrounding stars along with the lower reverse devices due to polishing. But the Huge O mintmark is visible with the naked eye. Now let's have a close look at the Hoosier Collection offering. This quarter is housed in old NGC holder with standard insert and graded VF35. I believe this to be well undergraded as this piece is full EF based on wear on the highest device points. The upper wing tips, eagle's eyebrow and right facing claws are evidence to an EF40 grade level. Surfaces are covered with thick crusty gray-brown patina that is 100% natural. After studying this important variety for an extended period of time, I'm unable to locate any blemishes whatsoever. The 1854-O Huge O variety is included in the Top 25 Varieties set and this example would be fitting for inclusion by an advanced collector. The GFRC Top 25 Varieties price guide lists this variety as follows; VF20 ($3500) and EF40 ($7500). PCGS Price Guide is VF20 ($2400) and EF40 ($6000) as prices have been adjusted downward during the past year. We are pricing this example at $3500 as much better than the assigned VF35 grade. I would not be surprised to see this example cracked out and end up in an EF40 holder at some point. An impressive offering from the Hoosier Collection. December 1969
