Liberty Seated Quarters - Top 25 Varieties

The Top 25 Liberty Seated Quarter Varieties were initially published in the Gobrecht Journal, Issue #111. Greg Johnson was the author and worked extensively with club colleagues toward the Top 25 Variety set formulation. Following are excerpts from Greg's article that provide the selection background and proper context.

The Liberty Seated quarter series has been referred to as an extreme series due to its many scarce and rare dates. Historically, the only thing rarer than the quarters has been collectors who pursue the set by die variety. Recent increases in the popularity and availability of the coins, due in part to dealer websites and internet based auctions, have spawned a small be dedicated group of collectors who specialize in Liberty Seated quarters by die variety. These collectors have realized that building this die variety set presents a unique numismatic opportunity for those with the patience and persistence to undertake the challenge.

Seated Quarter variety collectors are encourage to submit their Top 25 holdings via this Open Set Registry approach. The Open Set Registry accepts quarters whether TPG certified or in raw condition with the owner's grading and is structured for competitive display of Top 25 collections.

It is important that collectors carefully study their seated quarters and ensure proper variety attributions before submitting. The Liberty Seated Quarter Top 25 Varieties webpage provides sufficient attribution information.

Rating: The weighted average of all coin grades (i.e. aggregated sum of each coin grade + CAC premium multiplied by its rarity factor divided by the sum of all rarity factors). Missing coins are included and assigned a grade of 0. This metric is the basis for order rank.

Complete: The number of coin entries divided by the total number of coins in the Set.

Weighted Grade: The weighted average of all coin grades (see calculation above), but excluding any missing coins.

%: The ratio of coins certified by CAC (either green or gold sticker). Calculated as the number of CAC coins divided by the total number of entered coins.

Rarity Factor: The rarity assessment for each date or variety is based on availability in grades of EF-AU and uses a scale of R-1 through R-8 with a R-1 weight being the most common while a R-8 weight being the most difficult to locate. Rarity estimates are from Greg Johnson with the Larry Briggs Liberty Seated Quarter book as reference.
