50-Piece U.S. Early Silver Commemorative Design Type Set

Early United States silver commemoratives provide both a collecting and educational opportunity. This 50-piece silver commemorative set includes one design type for commemoratives issued from 1892 through 1954. Some commemorative types were issued over multiple years while others saw small production runs in a single year. Since survival rates for most issues are high, this series is often assembled in gem (MS65) and superb gem (MS66) grades. Many collectors prefer the original lustrous or satiny white appearance while others seek out nicely toned examples. This early silver commemorative set includes forty-eight half dollars, one quarter, and one dollar. In terms of scoring and applying weights to each issue, I studied PCGS MS66 populations and compared against the Sheldon Rarity scale to arrive at reasonable weights. Those issues with multiple years immediately become a 1 or 2 weight on a type basis while single year issues with tiny mintages are typically assigned higher weights. The key design type issues, based on weight are the Lafayette dollar, Missouri half dollar, Hawaii half dollar, Sesquicentennial half dollar and Monroe half dollar. Rating: The weighted average of all coin grades (i.e. aggregated sum of each coin grade + CAC premium multiplied by its rarity factor divided by the sum of all rarity factors). Missing coins are included and assigned a grade of 0. This metric is the basis for order rank.

Complete: The number of coin entries divided by the total number of coins in the Set.

Weighted Grade: The weighted average of all coin grades (see calculation above), but excluding any missing coins.

%: The ratio of coins certified by CAC (either green or gold sticker). Calculated as the number of CAC coins divided by the total number of entered coins.

Rarity Factor: The rarity assessment for each date/variety uses the Sheldon scale of R1 through R8 with a R1 weight being the most common while an R8 weight being the most difficult to locate. Rarity estimates are by Gerry Fortin.
