Ultimate #162 WB-2, Original, Newtown Collection With only two die marriages, attribution of the 1860-S half dollar is straightforward, this coin being the WB-2 with a tilted mintmark, while the date is positioned slightly to the right of the WB-1 placement. The fields exhibit light gray-rose patina, while the central figures are more silver in color. Bits of crust gather in both shields, star 13, and portions of the legend. Original luster is evident around the stars and reverse lettering, and the surfaces are especially mark free for the grade. Nicely struck with most star points distinct and clear separation of the claw joints. With less than a half million pieces struck at San Francisco in this year, this is a scarcer issue within the Seated half series. Housed in a PCGS Gen 4.1 (2002-2004) holder. This example is near-choice, accurately graded, and challenging as such.
