Comments: Both the date and arrows were placed on the master hub for 1854 dimes resulting in a consistent positioning of these devices on the obverse die. Variations in date hubbing strength on the working dies produced strong and weak date transfers. For 1854 and 1854-O dated dimes, the strong dates are noted as "Closed 54", where the lower right loop of the 5 digit and the left end of the horizontal segment of the 4 digit are joined by raised metal. Weak dates have a distinct gap between the 5 and 4 digits in the date and are designated as "Open 54". Obverse die degradation was a problem at both the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints. Several shattered obverses have been identified for 1854 dimes struck at Philadelphia mint. Continued searching may produce more late die state examples with severe obverses cracks. All 1854 date obverse dies have a die gouge directly below shield line #3 and a die defect on the upper right point of Star 6. Finally, it should be noted that identifying the individual 1854 obverse dies must be accomplished through the presence of unique die artifacts. Since die defects are minimal on the 1854 obverse dies, die cracks were the primary diagnostic tool for this task. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
