Market Acceptable $975 Scarce Low Mintage Issue, Fully Struck, Attractive, Light Gray-Rose Toning, Ancient Cleaning, Oregon Beaver Collection. A combination of low mintage plus low survival rate leaves few original 1856-S examples for present day collectors. Struck during the second year of San Francisco mint operations with mintage of 211,000. Few were saved by collectors resulting in a low survival rate. The 1856-S becomes rare at the AU58 grade level and very rare better. As reference for this offering, PCGS population report indicating thirty-eight in both EF grades. This brings me to a newly consigned example from Oregon Beaver Collection. Yes, the PCGS Genuine designation is accurate as this piece is not original. However, the eye appeal is heads and shoulders over your typical cleaned or molested survivor. Silver surfaces have seen a light wipe that has dulled the obverse fields. Since that time, the surfaces have recovered with light rose-gold and gray coloring. GFRC images accurately capture overall appearance. I believe the asking price is fair regardless of the Genuine designation. This piece grades full EF45 based on wear. Freshly graded and housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 holder.
