Low Mintage Philadelphia Date, Dazzling Frosty Cartwheel Luster, Choice Original Surfaces, Fully Struck, Clashed Dies, Accurately Graded . Mintage for the 1888 date is a low 12,000 pieces with most examples being proof-like or with highly reflective luster. This gorgeous example bucks the trend and offers frosty original surfaces. Mint frost is evident throughout the obverse and reverse fields and within the recesses of the major devices. Bright light viewing is most pleasing with dazzling carthweel effects as one swirls the half dollar to rotate the cartwheels like spokes on a moving tire. Surfaces are no question original and without any hairlines whatsoever. Many of the MS64s, on the market, that are deeply toned will sometimes hide hairlines. This example has a light gold skin with darker shades at the periphery. The transparent toning exposure every conceivable blemish under a light source. A careful 10c loupe review revealed two obverse bagmarks that are grade limiting else this piece would reside in an MS65 holder. This piece is therefore fairly graded but with substantial eye appeal. Housed in newer NGC holder with edge view insert. December 1969
