V-2 Eroded Obverse Die, Scarce Date, Crusty Dark Gray Patina, Completely Struck, Accurately Graded, Above Average Eye Appeal. The 1838-O V-1 and V-2 die pairings are considered to be R5 rarity according to Al Blythe in his DLRC Press Guidebook on Liberty Seated half dimes. V-2 is much scarcer than V-1 die pairing. Later V-2 strikes will exhibit a heavily rusted obverse die and should be graded by the reverse. This is exactly the case for the currently offered 1838-O V-2. Surfaces are covered with a thick crusty gray patina that validate the no question originality. Reverse wear is limited indicating conservative grading at the assigned VF30 level. Obverse strike is typical for worn V-2 dies. Many letters in the scroll are partially seen due to strike and not weak. Lower obverse gown line and base are also weakly detailed. It is difficult for the inexperience collector to appreciate the appearance of choice original V-2 specimens when the strikes are so problematic. This offering is superior to most seen including several previously sold by GFRC. Housed in 2013 generation PCGS holder with edge view insert. This piece is heading for CAC review during next submission if not sold at the Baltimore show. December 1969
