Original $1150 Transitional Closed Bud Reverse, Large O, Antique Gray Patina, Well Defined Devices, Conservative Grading, Top 100 Variety #19. The Closed Bud Transitional reverse die varieties were struck during early 1841 at the New Orleans mint while awaiting fresh reverse dies from the mother mint in Philadelphia. Strikes from left over Large O and Small O reverse were first identified in the 1970s but early researchers Kam Ahwash and John McCloskey and later made popular by Greer. The VG10 graded example offers device details associated with a higher grade due to conservative grading. Both sides are covered with antique gray patina. The obverse scroll edges are sharp and well defined with all letters in LIBERTY clear. The reverse wreath is also intact with 50% of the leaves showing internal veins. Blemish wise, there are ancient lines on the obverse only. These are toned over and not distracting. Housed in old blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. The PCGS label has everything one needs to know about this variety, Transitional Rev, Largeg O, FS-902 (FS-003.3). Also listed in the Top 100 Varieties set on the PCGS and GFRC Registries as entry #19. Last sold by GFRC during the July 2014 timeframe from the West Coast Collection.
