Market Acceptable $2250 Difficult Date at AU Grade Level, Hammered Strike, Gray-Gold Patina, Residual Luster, Accurately Graded, Details Grade, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. Locating any 1858 San Francisco dime at AU grade levels will prove to be quite challenging. This example is the F-102 web-book plate coin at and has been in the Gerry Fortin reference collection since 2004. Up until 2004, I struggled to locate a strong example of the F-102 die pairing and settled for this AU55 specimen in raw condition. Let's go through the highlights considering PCGS recently assigned an AU Details - Cleaned grade. First of all, this example has a bold hammered strike that one does not often see for the 1858 San Francisco date. Most examples are from the F-103 die pairing which has ongoing weak strikes. Next is toning. The obverse center is toned a deep gun metal gray and surrounded by golden shades at the stars and into the rim. The reverse is toned a consistent copper-rose with plenty of residual luster during bright light viewing. The PCGS AU Details grade was assigned due to faint vertical hairlines across Liberty's body. These can be seen with 10x loop under a light source. The hairlines do not extend into the left and right obverse fields. On the reverse, there are very faint hairlines between ONE and DIME otherwise the surrounding wreath is original. With the advent of technical grading, this boldly struck and nicely toned 1858-S dime is detailed graded. I paid a large sum to acquire and have priced it to reflect the obverse hairlines. Freshly graded and housed in 2015 style PCGS holder. From the Gerry Fortin reference collection. Unfortunately, not every Seated dime in that collection is perfectly original as die variety collecting does necessitate some compromises at time.
