With Motto
Choice HOLD
Misplaced Date, Superior Eye Appeal, Choice Original, Frosty Cartwheel Luster, Peripheral Toning, Hammered Strike, Under Graded, Golden Harvest Collection. An obviously under graded 1866 Liberty Seated half that warrants special attention. Mintage for the 1866 With Motto date is 744,900; a substantial number. However, this date was not saved by collectors resulting in a low mint state surviving population. This example, from the Golden Harvest Collection, seems out of place in its current NGC MS61 holder. Cartwheel luster is crisp and vibrant under a light source. Surfaces have a light frosty texture. Strike is bold and hammered. A thin ring of gold and blue toning is seen at the peripheries. Now the abrasions that knocked this one down to MS61. There are three to four faint hairlines in the upper left obverse field by Liberty's head that have to be the point on consternation. These are not apparent during in hand viewing and faint when viewed with a 10x loupe. Reverse fields exhibit faint micro chatter. I would grade this piece a full MS62/MS63 as the luster, strike and eye appeal are so dominant. Housed in older NGC holder with standard ring insert.
