$2750 FS-901, Reverse Die Spalling, Finest Graded, Gem Original Surfaces, Hammered Strike, Twin Lakes Collection. An incredible 1838 V-10 Seated gem half dime in mint state condition with heavy reverse die spalling. Listed as FS-901 in the Cherrypickers Guide. PCGS has graded several with this example being the finest known and COINFACTS plate coin. The V-10 die variety features ongoing degradation of the reverse die steel until the area between right wreath and AMERICA is completely disintegrated leaving behind a bubbled surface texture that accurately transfers to struck coins. This gem MS65 example is fully struck with complete head details and all star centrils crisp. The reverse is also hammered. Surfaces are pristine and entirely unabraded. A rich gun metal blue patina covers the obverse while the reverse has center rose. Frosty luster is brilliant and nearly blinding during bright light viewing. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 holder with CAC approval. PCGS label reads, "No Drapery FS-901, Rusted Rev Die." Pricing the 1838 V-10 die variety is challenging as there are few comparable examples. The consignor and GFRC have sent the asking price based on the last V-10 example sold on eBay during 2018. That example was graded only MS63.
