Choice $3850 Sole New Orleans $3 Issue, Choice Surfaces, Classic Green-Gold Coloring. 1854 saw the introduction of the $3 gold denomination at three of the four active mints of that period. A strategy to strike the new denomination at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Dahlonega mint covered the territorial U.S. during that timeframe. The New Orleans mint ceased production in 1854. Was this due to lack of acceptance by the southern population? This CAC approved survivor is one of 24,000 struck. Surfaces are 100% original with natural deep green-gold coloration coupled with peripheral light orange-gold. One has to look long and hard to locate a blemish on this near-gem example. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.0 (2015-2020) holder with CAC approval.
