Rare Low Mintage Philadelphia Half Eeagle Date, Choice Original, Port Matilda Collection. In the PCGS Price Guide, noted U.S. gold specialist David Akers opined that "The 1858 is the first in a long run of very rare low mintage Philadelphia Mint Half Eagles. During the 20 year period from 1858 to 1877, only the 1861 and 1873 had mintages in excess of 20,000 pieces. The 1858 is not often seen in any condition but when one is available, VF or EF is the likely grade." Such is the case with this Port Matilda release as he continues to "move up the ladder" at GFRC. Light russet hues overlay the expected green-gold coloration. The fields are lightly abraded as to be expected with a softer bullion metal in circulation. The CAC census currently stands at 20 with this lot being the lowest graded example approved. The CDN CAC price guide is $1230 as reference with none approved until the EF45 grade. Let's close with a JUST BUY IT NOW recommendation. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2024) holder with CAC approval. | December 1969 |
