Tiny Mintage, Scarce Mint State Offering, Steely-Frosted Luster, Swirling Cartwheels. The 1884 Philadelphia issue is well known as being a very scarce date in Mint State with only 1,950 struck. This offering is yet another release from an old time collection that has been off the market for several decades. The bright light eye appeal is terrific given the brilliant steely-frosted radiance and vibrant cartwheels. Coloration is a consistent honey-gold with no copper spots or any other visual distractions. Adding to the eye appeal is a hammered strike with high relief hair curls and fully detailed eagle feathers and talons. Faint wispy hairlines are seen in the fields but of no consequence. This lot has been to CAC with the hope of a green bean, but it was not to be. Regardless, a JUST BUY IT NOW recommendation is being issue as this is a superb example for the grade. Remember that it is important to buy the coin and not the holder and stickers. Housed in NGC 17 (2004-2008) holder. December 1969
