Ex, Repatriated Hungry Hoard, Crusted Surfaces, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. The 1868 F-110 web-book plate coin brings an interesting tale to tell! January 1994 brought a trip to Dallas Tx to meet with Jason Carter, a younger numismatist who was learning the business courtesy of Heritage Rare Coins. Through Jason, I learned of a large Seated dime hoard that had been repatriated from Hungry. I'm talking rolls of specific dates including 1856 Small and Large Date, 1873 With Arrows, and the 1868 Philadelphia date. Obtaining a roll of each of these dates was an opportunity to dramatically increase the speed of the Seated dime die variety research project for those dates. Interestingly, there were no new 1856 Large Date die pairings identifed in that roll as the work of Ken Hill, as published in the 1978 Gobrecht Journal, had fully identify the four die pairings. This Hungry Hoard F-110 specimen has thick crusty surfaces with EF wear and still remains without an upgrade after years of checking the 1868 date closely for a web-book replacement. The R4 rarity estimate is conservative. December 1969
