Another major highlight of the Massachusetts Collection, this high grade Mint State 1866-S dime is noteworthy for both original preservation and grade rarity. Frosty luster is accompanied by light gold toning with the overall presentation being most appealing. Darker "dirt" is seen on the upper reverse while the hairline-free fields easily merit the CAC designation. The strike is all there, with a full head and definition within the bow knot. F-101, with a downward sloping date, a small, weak mintmark, and vertical die crack through Liberty's upper body. CAC has approved only 18 total with two coins at MS64, and two pieces finer. The CAC price guide stands at $12,000 with a check of the GFRC Sales Archives being fortuitous with prior Mint State sales being an accurate value benchmark.
