This better-date San Francisco lot exhibits superb eye appeal given its colorful peripheral toning on both sides, with the reverse being close to exceptional. Steely frosted luster serves as a reflective backdrop for the peripheral toning that features aquamarine-blue on the obverse and complete yellow gold and aquamarine rings on the reverse. The California Mint produced only 140,000 quarters in this year, as attention shifted toward the Morgan dollar. The date is scarcer than its mintage would suggest. Briggs 1-A, the only die pair for this year, with thin verticals in the reverse shield, due to die polishing. Nicely struck with all star centers present and distinct detail in the arrow feathers.
