Original $1175 New October 1! Challenging New Orleans Date at Grade, Light Golden Surfaces, Indiana Collection. As the Civil War raged across the eastern American continent, the San Francisco mint was attempting to keep small denomination silver coinage flowing into local commerce. 230,000 dated 1864 dimes were struck with all but a few exceptions going into circulation. This date is particularly challenging in certified AU or better as most survivors have issues. The Indiana Collection is releasing a long held duplicate after purchasing the Massachusetts Collection specimen at auction. This example is one of six at the PCGS AU50 grade and is housed in a PCGS Gen 3.1 (1998-2002) old green holder. Both sides are fully struck with light wear on the high points. A faint gold "skin" is layered over creamy grayish-white surfaces. Under a bright light, residual frosted luster is noted.
