Gem $14500 Condition Census Offering, Exceptional Eye Appeal, Gem Original. A very special GFRC offering, this condition census 1878-S offering presents undisturbed steely-frosted luster and active cartwheels under a bright light. The coloration is as equally pleasing as the luster, though difficult to fully illustrate with my images. Light rose patination is uniformly layered across the obverse with a thin aquamarine arc at the periphery. The reverse toning colors are identical though less extensive. The strike is essentially complete with star 8 lacking a center point. Fields are pristine with only a minor and toned over contact pioint between the mintmark and denomination being seen with 10x. Let's move on to grade rarity as this is the key reason for placing a coin of this caliber in an advanced collection. Briggs opines that the date is scarcer than the 140,000 mintage would suggest due to melting for the new Morgan dollars. Circulated examples can be found but many have issues consistent with western frontier commerce. Checking the PCGS guide for the gem populaiton , there are two graded MS65, an MS65+, and two at MS66. The CAC gem approved population is 16 in all grades with two at MS65 and a single MS66. So where does this NGC MS65+ fit into this upper census? Based on my eyes, this example is full MS65 and unquestionably original. The offer price is a tad below CAC MS65 guide as the PCGS numbers are much too aggressive. The current plan is to offer this lot at the Manchester NH and Baltimore shows, and if not sold, it is heading to CAC for review with the associated price bump if it stickers. Now is your opportunity to front run that submission or another buyer. Housed in a new large font NGC holder.
