Briggs 1-A
Choice SOLD
Key Date, Low Surviving Population, Choice Original, Gray-Rose Patina, Typical Strike, Newtown Collection. Mintage of 83,000. A choice original example with gray-rose toning that is uniform across obverse and reverse. Darker shades are evident at the rims and surrounding the primary devices. Surfaces are entirely blemish free and pleasing. The 1872-S date is the rarest San Francisco Mint quarter issue, during the long lived Seated series, when compared to earlier challenging dates such as 1860-S, 1861-S and 1864-S. Survivors are elusive even in the lower grades with speculation that many examples were melted when the Act of February 12, 1873 changed the weight of this denomination. PCGS has graded four examples at the VF25 grade level with just twelve more between VF30 and AU58. CAC has only approved 9 total with 7 being in lower circulated grades (AG3 through VF25) and two at the MS66 level. Talk about a rare issue for choice original survivors! Housed in old blue label PCGS holder with standard ring insert. A key date offering from the Newtown Collection that belongs in an advanced collection. December 1969
