Description: Estes Tartar model rocket kit #1360 was marketed for only two years in 1981 through 1982 catalogs. The kit is more frequently located with a blue skill level hang tag and occasionally, a black rainbow hang tag. For simplicity, I am listing the 1981 Tartar kit as being sold with the black rainbow hang tag and the 1982 version with the blue skill level hang tag. The facecard is the same for the 1981 and 1982 kits and features an inflight Tartar missile over blue sky background.

Hang Tag (Header Card) Guide

The Tartar is a skill level 3 semi scale model of an early medium range surface to air missile (SAM) manufactured by General Dynamics for the U.S. Navy. It is powered with 18mm engines and employs an 12" parachute for safe recovery. Checking this Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIM-24_Tartar) will provide much useful information about the production RIM-24 Tartar. Following are several vintage images of a RIM-24 Tartar missile from the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer USS Berkeley (DDG-15) circa 1970.

Kit Contents: The Estes Tartar kit contains a single body tube, plastic nose cone, two die cut balsa sheets, an 18mm engine mount, multi color decal sheet, launch lug, 12" parachute and instruction sheet. I've built the Tartar and the kit is quite straightforward.

Availability: Estes Tartar kits are moderately scarce on eBay.
