1838-O With Stars

Counterfeit 101

Obverse 1: With Stars, Date Shifted Right

Reverse A: Closed Bud Reverse, Large O

Obverse 1                                                 Reverse A

Comments: All seen have had a die lump joining the 3 and 8 in the date. At least 4 seen. It is possible that Heaton referred to this piece in his famous work. Scarce.

During July 2013, Tim Cook consigned the below counterfeit to Rare American Coins. This example was struck from the same dies as the Brian Greer specimen as all design elements match including the die lump joining the 3 and 8 digits in the date. However, the metal appears to be copper or brass with a silver wash. A portion of the design elements on the reverse are incused with the field area higher than the denomination (ONE DIME), the upper right wreath leaves and letters STA(TES OF A)MERICA.
