Comments: Arrows were added to seated dimes in 1853 to reflect a weight change to 2.48 grams, down from 2.67 grams. Breen indicates that about 50 pairs of dies were prepared for the Philadelphia mint. Lengthy research of this date has revealed 39 different obverse dies of which 15 have hubbed dates and arrows. The 1853 With Arrow Philadelphia dies saw extensive usage based on the amount of varieties with significant shattering of dies and late die state dies with retained cuds. The identification of the individual unhubbed date and arrows varieties was accomplished through measurements of the date position and the horizontal and vertical positions of the left arrow. All horizontal measurements are referenced to the denticles below the left arrow and date and employ the Denticle Ruler method for reporting. I have included larger scans, in the Unhubbed Date and Arrows section, as pictorial guides for the tedious process of identifying the individual unhubbed obverse dies.
After researching the 1853 With Arrows seated dimes for several years, it became obvious that a portion of that year's Philadelphia mintage was performed with dies having hubbed dates and arrows. On these dimes, there was no movement in the date and arrows. To identify the individual 1853 dimes with hubbed dates and arrows an alternate method was devised. This method relied primarily on the location and shapes of die cracks and die scratches on the obverse die. Finding later die state examples of 1853 hubbed arrows and date coins in grades of VF or better was necessary to perform this study. Much attention was given to the shape and location of the die cracks as 1853 With Arrow obverse dies appear to always crack first at the left base/left arrow and Star 7, Liberty's head and Star 8 regions. I have not provided a rarity estimate for the 1853 Hubbed Date and Arrows dies. The time required for attributing each example of hubbed date and arrows dimes seen at coin shows is simply prohibitive.
