Scarcity: The 1862-S is very similar in scarcity as the 1861-S date and very rare in Mint State. This date is also considered to be under valued at present pricing levels. Comments: Greer indicated that this date comes with "two minor date placement varieties". I have only seen one date placement, however the single obverse die is paired with two different reverse dies. One of the two reverse dies is left over from 1861 and is re-used in 1862 to strike coinage producing Varieties 102 and 102a. This die can be identified by its weak or incomplete denticles. Variety 102a is popular with rotated reverse collectors but is typically found in lower circulated grades. During the 2002 ANA, important 1861-S and 1862-S love tokens surfaced with the obverse engravings of Fredrik and Doris. Both dimes are well struck and grade AU58 with their original patina demonstrating the true appearance of well preserved early San Francisco coinage. Questions about the identity of Fredrik and Doris remain. Were they children of a prominent business man in the San Francisco area? Or were they simply lovers. Images of the two dimes are available here. I would appreciate any information about the identity of Fredrik and Doris. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
