Variety Vs. Denticle Ruler Cross Reference Table Obverse Date Position Comparison Guide Scarcity: A relatively common date in lower grades that becomes scarce in EF or better. Very scarce in Mint State. This date will be found with weakness at the OF AMERICA portion of the legend. Separating the individual obverse die varieties will be challenging even for variety specialists. Comments: Ahwash attributes the general weakness of the central obverse and reverse to wear in the hub die. The obverse weakness varies across the fourteen identified dies. Several dies show overall weakness, including the base region and in OF AMERICA. Plate coins from Obverse dies 3, 8 and 12 exhibit poor device details, while coins from Obverse dies 2, 6 and 9 have consistent legend quality and a base depth that matches the strength of the date punch. The average mintage per die of slightly under 65,000 indicates limited die usage. The lack of obverse die cracks on nearly all surviving dimes is consistent with the low average mintage per die calculation. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
