Comments: All 1873 Carson City dimes will have a die crack through the mintmark as a diagnostic or validation point.

Obverse 1, the single obverse die for that year, features small left and right arrows and a weak UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend. Liberty's features are delicate and subject to wear after a short time in circulation.

While paired with the 1873 With Arrows obverse die, Reverse A die exhibits metal flow lines and a die crack in the left wreath leaves from 7:00 and existing to rim at 10:00. Please see the Battle Born PCGS MS65 example below.

Take care in locating truly original 1871 through 1874 Carson City dimes in either uncertified or certified condition. I have seen several higher grade EF and AU grade Carson City dimes in professional grading service holders that were not original, rather having been artificially toned to improve the attractiveness of the coin. When a collector does locate an original and problem free 1871 through 1874 Carson dime, be prepared to pay a strong premium to acquire the example.

The Stack's Bowers Battle Born Collection auction (August 9, 2012) featured an uncirculated 1873-CC With Arrows dime which brought final bid of $240,000 without buyer's premium. Below are the Stack's Bowers website images and provenance description.
