Choice $1300 Small S, Sharp Steely Luster, Rose-Blue Coloration, Completed Strike, Gerry Fortin Reference Collection. If strict old time originality is your cup of tea, please consider this wonderful 1884-S F-104 Mint State example. Clearly a better San Francisco date but not in the league of the 1885-S. Mintage is 564,969 with Mint State survivors being scarce. For example, PCGS has only certified 10 at the offered grade. Since housed in PCGS Gen 3.0 (1990-1993) old green holder, it might be one of the earliest examples graded at the grade. Purchased during March 2003 as part of the Seated dime research project. I've held back this one for a long time as just enjoy the sharp steely fields that are layered with rose-blue skin that screams originality. If looking for a flashy coin, this one is not for you as the skin mutes some of the luster though a bright light while exposes partial mirrors. Finally, this is the F-104 plate coin within the Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference.
