 Gem $1200 Monfort Johnson Pedigree, Gem Original, Gouged Reverse Die, Massachusetts Collection.. Greer 101, The Montfort Johnson plate coin as featured in the November 1979 edition of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club's Gobrecht Journal. In that article, Monfort Johnson provides a lengthy discussion concerning survival rates for Civil War dimes and a detailed analysis of an 1862 dime with deep reverse gouge. At that time, this variety was labeled as Ahwash-6 since the Kam Ahwash Encyclopedia was the only reference available. The offered example is the Montfort Johnson plate coin with its pedigree carefully preserved for subsequent decades in the GFRC Sales Archive. Brilliant frosted radiance and faint gold/rose rim toning are the highlights of this historical piece. Grading is quite conservative with luster that exceeds my expectations at the certified grade level. The reverse die gouge behind O(N)E into (E) is crisp against reflective Mint State surfaces. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.4 (2005-2011) holder. Considerable eye appeal along with the LSCC pedigree should stimulate active bidding as who knows when this piece will return to the market.
