Gem | $2650 | Cameo Designation, Brilliant Mirrors, Gem Original, Evergreen State Collection.. This 1865 Cameo Proof dime offers a window into the preparation of proof planchets. Those planchets were reported to be buff with a polishing cloth. Frequently, I will see proof strikes with a struck through "lint mark" that validates the proof status. This newly consigned example is quite special with at least eight lint marks scattered throughout the obverse while the reverse is pristine. Please have a look at the obverse image to note the multiple lint marks in the upper fields as a starting point. Under a bright light, the mirrors are sharply brilliant and pleasing. There is a hint of gold toning at the peripheries. The Cameo designation is certainly warranted based on the overall presentation. A conversation piece concerning the presence of lint marks on early proof coinage. Housed in PCGS Gen 6.1 (2020-2025) holder. |
