Gem $1450 New March 3! Cameo Designation, Gorgeous Bullseye Toning, Tooled Die Crack Below Bow Knot, Gem Original, Evergreen State Collection.. This gorgeous 1890 proof strike validates that the Philadelphia employed reworked business strike dies for "proof strikes". The F-101 die pairing struck both circulation and proof strikes with the proofs coming after circulation strikes. What is amazing with this die pairing is a reverse die crack that developed from the right ribbon end downward to the denticles below the left ribbon end. Interestingly, an attempt was made to tool out the die crack on the reverse die prior to or during the striking of proof coinage. By using a side lighting source during the photography of the die crack for web-book illustration, the tooled area becomes evident. An important offering previously from the Gerry Fortin Reference Collection that is 1890 F-101a web-book plate coin at The Definitive Resource for Liberty Seated Dime Variety Collectors online reference. Housed in PCGS Gen 4.1 (2002-2004) holder as purchased during early 2004.
