Comments: Obverse 1 exhibits rim cuds at 2:00 and 4:00.

The repunched mintmark is the primary diagnostic for Reverse A. Later die states of Reverse A show die cracks from rim to (U)NITED and joining top and bottom of letters (UNITE)D. Denticles are weakly struck on both obverse and reverse.

Ahwash indicates that on May 7-8, 1838, the first 30 specimens of this variety were struck with 10 pieces placed into the cornerstone of the New American Theatre in New Orleans and the remainder distributed as souvenirs. An additional striking of 367,434 pieces occurred during June and July 1838.
