Scarcity: Available in grades G through VF but becomes difficult in EF and rare in AU or better. 1845-O dimes are extremely rare in mint state, the Eliasberg 1845-O dime being the finest known to date. Several well struck AU coins have been offered at conventions and Internet auctions in the past few years. In recent years, the CoinValues pricing in AU50 has increased but still remains understated. Comments: After the release of the Top 100 Varieties in 2005 and the designation of a second 1845-O reverse die as the "Huge O", collectors and dealers questioned if the Huge O was truly a second reverse die pairing or a progressive degradation of the original Large O reverse die. During 2010, the question was settled with detailed mintmark size measurements of Large O and Huge O specimens. The measurement results and secondary diagnostics confirm that the "Huge O" mintmark is a later die state artifact of the original Large O mintmark. To properly label the differences in mintmark appearance on the lone 1845-O reverse die, the terms Large Thin O and Large Thick O mintmarks are inserted effective June 2010. The previous pricing premium for the "Huge O" is eliminated as the transition point between Large Thin O and Large Thick O has no clear delineation to justify a premium. Overall, this date comes well struck for a New Orleans seated dime, but will be seen with occasional weakness in head and central portions of the reverse leaves. Higher grade examples will show signs of die rust in Liberty's upper body. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
