Comments: Obverse 1 is in an early die state with a bold impression of Liberty and the date punch. Evidence of die rust can be seen within Liberty's hair and upper gown folds. The 4 digit in the date shows repunching under the right horizontal crossbar. Die scratches are visible in the gown directly above the pendant. Die chips are present around Stars 3 through 6 and Stars 12 through 13.

Throughout its life, Reverse A will experience obvious changes in the "O" mintmark shape and center oval size. Those changes will be carefully discussed and illustrated in subsequent die states. During an early die state (Variety 101), Reverse A exhibits wreath and bow design elements that are boldly struck as a result of deep hubbing into the working die. Please note the measurement of the mintmark sidewalls (bottom point intersecting die field) in the above illustration. A long die line from the rim near the top of U(N)ITED down across the top of (U)NITED is a diagnostic point during early die state.
