Comments: A second obverse die is paired with Reverse A. Obverse 2 can be identified by a date position that is nearly level. This date position is in contrast to the downward sloping date of Obverse 1 and therefore simplifies the task of separating the two 1866-S obverse dies. A long diagonal die crack, as illustrated above, is present on many specimens. The die crack proceeds downward from AM(E)RICA through Liberty's lower gown, into the top of the 8 digit and into the bottom of the 1 digit. Additionally, there is a die scratch between the right scroll end and the adjacent gown fold. On the plate coin, the die scratch penetrates the gown fold.

Reverse A again features the Small Weak S mintmark.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, PCGS AU55 CAC Green - Ex. Cook Collection
