Comments: This date requires further research, since only eleven obverse dies have been categorized against a historical mintage of 2,500,000+ pieces. The examples in the author's collection rarely exhibit die cracks, indicating a potential for the Philadelphia mint to have generated a low average mintage per die pair. Without the aid of die cracks as a diagnostic, the date position, misplaced digits and repunching are the primary die designators. It is worth mentioning again that well struck higher grade 1885 dimes are challenging to locate and not as available as the date's mintage would suggest. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
