Comments: Ahwash indicates that this obverse is only available as a proof and that the date has a slight upward slope. After researching the Heritage Auction Archives for 1888 proofs, I have not been able to locate a proof example that shows both a date to the far right and simultaneous upward slope. Since the above plate coin matches the horizontal date placement suggested by Ahwash and Ahwash does not provide a plate coin for his Ahwash-3, I have chosen to designate this specimen as A-3 as a logical conclusion.
The final 8 digit in the date exhibits a die defect in the upper loop.
