Comments: 1839 dimes present two significant die varieties and the re-use of proof dies for business strikes. The Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse (Variety 105c)is one of the key varieties in the entire Liberty Seated dime series. The author is aware of six examples extant of Variety 105c at this time. At least four examples of Variety 105b, a middle die state with only the vertical crack through the date and Liberty, have surfaced. Examples of Variety 105a, without any signs of an obverse die crack, are starting to surface as more attention is paid to locating this variety. A proof die pair (Variety 105) with a unique position is an important diagnostic for cherrypicking business strike Variety 105a examples. The date punch on Obverse 2 is positioned further left than the other 1839 obverse dies. The second significant variety of 1839 is Variety 104, which is another cracked obverse. This variety is a late die state of a heavily used obverse die and is more common than the Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues)
