Comments: 1839 dimes present only two significant varieties. The Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse (Variety 105b)is one of the key varieties in the Seated dime series. The author is aware of five examples extant of Variety 105b at this time. At least four examples of Variety 105a, a middle die state with only the vertical crack through the date and Liberty, have surfaced. Examples of Variety 105, without any signs of an obverse die crack, are starting to surface as more attention is paid to locating this variety. Interestingly, all 1839 coinage, EXCEPT Varieties 105 through 105b, exhibits a rotated reverse. This is a key diagnostic for locating an example of Variety 105 without any signs of the obverse cracks. A second diagnostic for Variety 105 is the date position. The date punch on Obverse 2 is positioned further left than the other 1839 obverse dies. The second significant variety of 1839 is Variety 104, which is another cracked obverse. This variety is a late die state of a heavily used obverse die and is more common than the Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues)
