Comments: This date needs further research as the historically stated mintage is not supported by the present number
of identified dies and their die states. Variety 102a, with its shattered reverse, is the only reverse die seen
with significant die cracks. Since only four business strike obverse dies are listed, the average mintage per die is
about 350,000 which is inconsistent with the condition of surviving dimes. An average mintage of 350,000 would suggest
extended die usage and that late die state examples would be more available. Variety 102, the repunched 1843/1843 date
is popular and easily cherrypicked. Examples of Variety 102a, with the shattered reverse, will be challenging for collectors.
