Reverse Die and Mintmark Position Comparison Guide

Scarcity: A very difficult date to locate in grades of VF or better. Greer indicates that the Small O is the scarcest
of the three mintmark sizes followed by the Medium O and finally the Large O. However, I have struggle for years to find
nice examples of the Large O variety in the grade range of EF to AU. This date has been undervalued in EF or better for
many years. The demand for the three mintmark sizes by variety collectors also limits the available supply for date and mint collectors.

Updated Greer Rarity Ratings

Medium O Rarity: G-VG R3-, F-VF R3+, EF-AU R5, MS R7
Large O Rarity: G-VG R2+, F-VF R3, EF-AU R5, MS R7
Overall Rarity: G-VG R2, F-VF R3-, EF-AU R4, MS R6+

Comments: 1850-O dimes are seldom found with die cracks. The numbers of identified dies as compared to a mintage
of 510,000 produces an average mintage of between 100,000 to 125,00 for each die. This low average mintage per die
indicates limited die usage and supports the lack of excessive die wear or cracking. As a result, die diagnostics are
limited to the obverse date position and reverse mintmark position. These diagnostic points should prove to be
sufficient to identify each variety.

October 2012 Comment - The 2012 CoinValues pricing as listed below appears to be too inexpensive in MS60 and MS63 grades.
Given the dates' rarity in Mint State, a $2750 target price for MS63 example is too low. If you have a TPG graded 1850-O
dime in MS63 that you wish to sell for $2750, please email me immediately!
