Scarcity: This date is fairly common in grade Good through VF, but becomes scarce in EF or better. Underrated in AU and
Mint State grades at current CoinValue levels.

Comments: This is a difficult date to research for varieties due to limited movement in the date punch placements. Most examples are well
struck and do not show significant die cracks. This indicates that the dies of 1851 saw reasonable usage in the minting of the 1,000,000+
examples. This year does present a large number of repunched dates with Varieties 105 and 106 being very popular. Varieties 102, 107
and 108 have been discovered in the last 10 years and still remain difficult to locate. Identifying die marriage is very difficult due to
the lack of die cracks to aid as a diagnostic tool. The collector is limited to the flash patterns around the bow loops and other occasional
die artifacts for reverse die cataloguing.

October 2012 Comment: Current CoinValues pricing in MS63 grade is too low given the difficulty in locating 1851 in problem free Mint
State grades. It is difficult to imagine that 1851 dimes have not appreciated in value and rather decreased in value in Mint State grades
during the past 30 years!
