Obverse 2.2 Reverse A
Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)
Comments: Greer located a high grade example of Obverse 2 that exhibits a very weak date. He suggested that a filled die could have produced this variety. Closer examination of other obverse device elements revealed additional irregular or missing features. In the above illustration, the horizontal lines of the shield are inconsistent in their width from the left to right sides of the shield. The letters in UNITED are weakly struck with missing serifs or feet. An obverse die with residual surface grease could be a credible explanation for the inconsistent features of Variety 102a. I would welcome other theories from seated coinage specialists.
