Obverse Diagnostic Point(s)                   Reverse Diagnostic Point(s)

Comments: Reverse B is always found weak at the denomination and at the lower inner left and right leaves. This reverse die was previously employed by the San Francisco mint to strike coinage in 1869 and in 1870. Compare the Small Weak S mintmark position on 1871-S Reverse B with the mintmark placements on 1869-S Reverse B and 1870-S Reverse A.

Before re-use in 1871, Reverse B appears to have been polished or lapped are the fields are partially mirrored with lightly frosted devices.

Plate Coin: G. Fortin Collection, NGC MS64
