Comments: The 1872 date presents variety collectors with five repunched dates, two misplaced dates and a spectacular doubled reverse die to search for. Though 1872 dimes can come weakly struck in the head and bow knot areas, they are generally free of die cracks and other later die state artifacts. The identification of sixteen obverse dies is roughly consistent with a 250,000 pieces per die benchmark for the mints in the later 19th century. It is worth noting that two different dies were used to strike proof examples; one of the two obverse dies having a very obvious misplaced digit in the base. This parallels the occurrence in 1868 where two obverse dies were employed to strike proofs with one die being blundered with a misplaced 1 digit. In both cases, examples produced from the obverse die with the misplaced digit are the rarer of the proofs for each year. Value As A Date (Coin World Trends/CoinValues
