Second Filled Die Example with a Multiple Filled Obverse
Comments: In its polished die state, Obverse 1 suffers a filled die issue. Two Variety 101a specimens have been located over a twenty-five year period that indicate filled die coinage was struck with this late die state pair. The lower obverse area between the date and shield/gown shows single or multiple depressions where the obverse die was obstructed (probably with grease). Note on the first plate coin that shield line #5 can still be seen within the single depression at the lower shield. On the lower plate coin, the filled die areas are more extensive.
Locating examples of 1842-O Variety 101b in EF or better grades will be extremely challenging.
