Comments: Obverse 2 has been polished or lapped to remove all signs of repunching in the date. The primary diagnostic that remains for identifying this die, in its later die state, is a small die line in the upper shield between shield line 12 and the right edge of the shield. A high power microscope is needed to view this line.

Reverse C is the business strike reverse die (B) of 1844 and has been polished or lapped to remove the numerous die lines on the lower left and right sides of the die. Traces of the die lines on the lower left side are visible between the rim and UN(ITE)D. The bow flash patterns between this variety and business strike 1844 examples also match, confirming the usage of the 1844 reverse die in 1845.
